Mentoring Minutes are what you make of them!
This is your meeting—be prepared to lead it. Mentors are volunteering their time and it is up to you to be prepared with your questions so that the discussion is meaningful and helpful for you. What are your goals for the meeting? Do you want to know what it’s like to work in a particular field? How to get your foot in the door? Are you hoping that this conversation will help you reach a decision about your next steps? Be sure to review your mentor’s bio so that you can ask specific questions.
Tips for success:
  • Be on time (or early!) and be ready to introduce yourself and ask your questions.
  • Before the meeting, check that your camera, mic and wifi are working well!
  • You want to project a professional image. You don’t need to be in a full suit, but business casual is recommended.
  • Do not ask for a job. Remember your goal is to learn more information to help you in your career exploration.
  • Show your interest and enthusiasm—and don’t forget to say thank you. Make this is a thoughtful note that highlights some top points you took away from the conversation, and how they helped you.
  • Be respectful of your mentor’s time and try to end the meeting on time.
  • After your interview, take a few moments to jot down notes about what you learned. Are you still interested in this career? What advice was most helpful? What questions do you still have? Take some time to reflect.
