UN Women Empowering Women Worldwide
Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director, UN Women


Michelle Bachelet On April 28, 2011, Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women and Under-Secretary-General for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, addressed WFPG on the role her agency plays in the political and economic empowerment of women internationally. The luncheon was held at the United Nations and moderated by WFPG President Patricia Ellis.

Launched on February 24th of this year, UN Women is already working hard to improve life for women worldwide. Bachelet outlined the five main goals of UN Women for the audience: encouraging women's economic empowerment, increasing female political participation and leadership, engaging women in peace and post-conflict processes, involving women in national development planning, and ending violence against women and girls. To help achieve these goals, UN Women will build partnerships with other UN agencies such as UNESCO, UNICEF, and UN HABITAT, as well as international NGOs and locally-based women's organizations. Ambassador DiCarlo was sworn in as United States Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations on July 8, 2010. She will be discussing the challenges of addressing international crises and the importance of US leadership.

He was appointed to be Pakistan's Ambassador to the US in 2008 and has held numerous senior-level government positions, including as adviser to the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Ambassador Haqqani will be addressing the increasing importance of as well as the impact of recent events on the relationship between the US and Pakistan.

Opportunities and Challenges for the Continent

Join the WFPG for an embassy reception and program hosted by Ambassador Sheila Siwela of Zambia to recognize the thirteen African women ambassadors in DC who represent over one third of the women ambassadors to the US. This program will cover key regional issues including investment and development, women's empowerment and leadership, combating terrorism and the role of China.

 On April 13, 2011 in DC and on May 19, 2011 in NY, WFPG honored women diplomats and celebrated the centennial of International Women's Day. Speakers in DC included Deputy Director of the State Department's Office of Global Women's Issues Anita Botti, Baroness Mary Goudie of the House of Lords, Ambassador Poptodorova of Bulgaria, Ambassador Bristol of Grenada, Ambassador Grabar-Kitarovic of Croatia, Ambassador Nonoo of Bahrain, and Ambassador Prince of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In NY, speakers included Ambassador Jolkkonen, Consul General of Finland, Ambassador Borges of Timor-Leste, and Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Al-Thani.  Author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon spoke to the Women's Foreign Policy Group on her new book The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe. The book tells the story of Kamela Sadiqi, who, desperate to support her brothers and sisters and unable to earn a living outside the home during the Taliban rule, started a dressmaking business in her living room which offered work to 100 women in her community.
