Join journalist and author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon as she discusses her new book The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, which tells the story of Kamela Sediqi, the unlikely breadwinner who became an entrepreneur in Afghanistan under the Taliban. Desperate to support her brothers and sisters and unable to earn a living outside the home, she started a dressmaking business in her living room which offered work to 100 women in her community.  On February 11th, Dawn Calabia, Senior Advisor at Refugees International, spoke to the Women's Foreign Policy Group and guests about the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. Calabia traveled to Afghanistan in November with Refugees International to talk to aid workers and displaced Afghans about the impacts of deteriorating security and shrinking humanitarian space. 2011 Annual DC Mentoring Fair

 On February 2nd, the Women's Foreign Policy Group held its annual DC Mentoring Fair at the George Washington University. The event was attended by over 150 students and young professionals. The Fair gave participants an opportunity to speak with accomplished professionals in such fields as the Department of State, international law, business, international development, think tanks, and the United Nations. On January 24th, Karen DeYoung, Senior Diplomatic Correspondent for The Washington Post and David Sanger, Chief Washington Correspondent for The New York Times, addressed WFPG members and guests on foreign policy and national security challenges for the Obama Administration. DeYoung focused on the situation in Afghanistan, describing the changing priorities for US troops in the region, while Sanger discussed the situations in Iran, North Korea, and China as tests of the possibilities and limits of President Obama’s policy of “engagement.” View photos and transcript

Women's Foreign Policy Group launched 2011 with an Embassy Series event honoring Ambassador Chan Heng Chee of Singapore to the United States at her embassy. Ambassador Chan spoke to WFPG members and guests on Asia's economic growth and the role of Singapore in the region and globally. Ambassador Chan assumed her post in 1996 and is now the most senior woman ambassador in Washington, DC. View photos and transcript
